Im not blessed with good skin, I just invest in my skin and have a routine that works. A major part in my routine is exfoliation. Exfoliation is the key to good skin but when we think about exfoliation we often think just about scrubs. Scrubs are manual exfoliants and only help remove the top level of rough, dry or cracked skin. Chemical’s such as AHA (more suitable for dry skin) and BHA (suitable for oily skin) get deep down at the surface of your skin and break it down. I use a chemical exfoliant almost daily and I manually exfoliate about two-three times a week. A chemical exfoliant is basically a lotion that helps break down the skin, so you can wear it under makeup, which is what I do. I use AHA’s (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) because I have dry skin which can become rough and sandpaper like if I don’t exfoliate enough. These are the chemical exfoliates I use. I alternate and just pick which ever one is closer for the day.
If you are new to chemical exfoliants I suggest you start off with a 8% or 10% AHA formula, since it can make your skin irritated. Also dont apply everyday, see how your skin is reacting and you be the judge. I started every other day and gradually moved up in percentage. The AHA Soufflé is relatively cheap, around $15 at Ulta. I bought it because it had outstanding reviews and it works really well! I purchased the NeoStrata 15% AHA at Skinstore.com for around $45. They both are good but if I had to pick one it would be the Souffle. Sometimes it stings a bit, but I just tough it out!
I dont have paticuelar oily skin so Im not well educated on BHA but I know Neutrogena makes a great one. Basically if you have dry skin use AHA, it exfoliates and it hydrates. If you have oily skin and clogged pores use BHA since it breaks down the oil more than it breaks down the skin.
Once using chemical exfoliants, your skin will start to get rough and patchy if you don’t manually exfoliate since it is speeding up your cell cycle. I always exfoliate on a Sunday (I have the most time to pamper my skin then) and another day during the week, usually Wednesday. My favorite manual exfoliator is Philosophy’s The Microdelivery Peel. I will warn you, its intense! Almost always gives me a burning sensation and keep in mind, Im pretty experienced with exfoliation. This is a process and takes about 7-10 minutes since you have to leave the activator on for a few minutes so it can work. I love this kit and it makes my skin super soft and pore less!
For quick exfoliation I used a myriad a products. Two of my favorites are: Kate Sommervile Exfolikate & Laura Mercier Face Polish.
